Homework/Independent Study is set for all students on a regular basis according to their age and ability.

Its purposes are:

  • To extend learning and understanding
  • To develop independence and self-responsibility
  • To provide opportunities to assess progress and understanding
  • To allow parents/carers to see something of the work being done by their children, and to take an active interest in their work and progress

Younger students should expect to receive homework/independent study tasks that should take approximately half an hour for each subject. Homework/independent study is set to dovetail in with the school timetable. We hope that parents/carers will provide an appropriate environment for their child to attempt and complete homework/independent study. Some students may wish to take advantage of facilities and expertise available at school beyond the formal school day and at lunchtimes to start or complete tasks.

We welcome parents/carers taking an interest in their child’s homework/independent study – do look at it and encourage, but do not do it! All students are issued with a Student Planner in which to record homework/independent study and other important information. Students are expected to take care of the Student Planner. It is checked regularly by tutors and we ask parents/carers to review and sign it each week. The Student Planner provides a valuable means of communication between school and home.

If you have any questions or problems, please contact your child’s Tutor or the teacher in the first instance.
